Bamboo skewer size selector
Tell us what goes on the stick and we will tell you the diameter, the length and the pack count — with the reason behind it, so you can check our working.
Which bamboo skewer size do I need?
Use 2.5–3.0 mm for fruit, cheese and canapés, 3.5–4.0 mm for chicken, paneer and mixed vegetables, and 5.0–6.0 mm for lamb, kebab rolls and heavy loads. Length should exceed the food by 30–40 mm so there is a clean handle.
- Diameter is a load question, not a size preference
- 3.5 mm covers most of a mixed menu
- Add 30–40 mm beyond the food for the handle
- Pack count falls as diameter rises, so cartons stay one size

The full size ladder
| Food | Diameter | Length | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fruit, cheese and canapés | 2.5–3.0 mm | 150–180 mm | A thin section pierces soft items without tearing them, and a short stick keeps a canapé balanced on a platter. |
| Cocktail garnish and olives | 2.5 mm or paddle pick | 90–150 mm | Short and light; a paddle head gives the bartender something to grip and a surface to brand. |
| Chicken tikka, paneer, mixed vegetables | 3.5 mm | 200–250 mm | The single most ordered diameter — it carries most of a mixed menu without flexing when the skewer is turned. |
| Prawns and fish | 3.0–3.5 mm | 200 mm | Fine enough not to break delicate flesh, stiff enough to lift a loaded skewer off the grill in one piece. |
| Satay and yakitori | 3.0–4.0 mm | 200–250 mm | Flat or round both work; length is set by how much handle the diner needs outside the grill line. |
| Lamb, kebab rolls, heavy loads | 5.0–6.0 mm | 250–350 mm | Dense protein bends a thin stick. At 5–6 mm the section carries the load and survives repeated turning. |
| Corn cobs, whole vegetables, display | 6.0 mm | 350–450 mm | Long and thick, used as much for presentation and reach across a hot surface as for load. |
Questions this tool answers
- How long should a bamboo skewer be?
- Measure the run of food on the stick and add 30 to 40 mm for a handle. A 150 mm run of food needs a 200 mm skewer; 250 mm gives a more generous grip for a hot grill.
- Which skewer diameter is the most versatile?
- 3.5 mm. It is the most ordered diameter because it carries chicken, paneer and mixed vegetables without flexing, while still being fine enough for firmer fruit.
- Do bamboo skewers need soaking?
- Soak for about 20 minutes before direct grilling. That stops the exposed end charring while the food cooks.
