Bamboo regrows in three to five years. Plastic does not.

Our case for bamboo is a materials case, not a marketing one: fibre density, regrowth cycle, chemical-free processing and a compostable end of life. It is also what lets a brand put a defensible plastic-free claim on its own packaging.

Why is bamboo a more sustainable material for food-service disposables?

Bamboo is a grass that regrows from an intact rhizome in three to five years without replanting, unlike hardwood which takes twenty to forty. GreenLife Bamboo processes it mechanically with no bleach, wax or coating, so the finished skewer, stirrer or stick is home compostable and replaces plastic items now restricted in India.

Sourcing and processing

Grove practice

Culms are cut at three to five years above the node. The rhizome is never lifted, so the clump regenerates on its own and the soil is not turned over.

Chemical-free finish

Smoothness comes from a rotary drum polisher and abrasive media, not from bleach, sulphur or wax. Nothing is added that has to come off before food contact.

Waste reuse

Node offcuts and polishing dust leave the line as briquette and mulch feedstock rather than as landfill.

Questions about bamboo and disposal

Is bamboo really more sustainable than wood?

Bamboo is a grass, not a tree. The culm is cut above the node and the rhizome stays in the ground, so the plant regrows in three to five years with no replanting and no soil disturbance.

How do I dispose of bamboo skewers and stirrers?

Untreated bamboo is home compostable. Break longer sticks, remove any food residue to your food waste stream, and add the bamboo to a compost heap or garden waste collection.

Are the products bleached or waxed?

No. The pale finish comes from mechanical drum polishing. We use no bleach, no sulphur, no wax and no surface coating.
